Boeddhistische Weherahena-tempel

Weherahena Poorwarama Raja Maha Viharaya ligt in het Matara-district van Sri Lanka, ongeveer 6 kilometer van de stad Matara. Deze vrij unieke tempel staat bekend als de eerste tunneltempel ter wereld. De tempel herbergt een enorm Boeddhabeeld van 130 voet dat werd gebouwd volgens de tijdperken van Anuradhapura en Polonnaruwa en bestaat ook uit alle belangrijke kenmerken van een boeddhistische tempel: de pagode, een heilige bo-boom en het Samadhi Boeddhabeeld. De muren van de tempel zijn versierd met Boeddha-muurschilderingen. Volgens historische gegevens vertellen de tunneltempelschilderingen de Jātaka-verhalen (legendes) van Ummagga Jathaka

en Umandawa.

Bewrukannala Buduraja Maha Viharaya

Wewurukannala Raja Maha Viharaya, deze heilige boeddhistische tempel ligt op 1,5 kilometer van Dikwella richting Beliatta. De belangrijkste attractie van de tempel is het 160 meter hoge standbeeld van zittende Boeddha. Het is het grootste beeld in heel Sri Lanka en dateert uit het einde van de 18e eeuw. De tempel heeft nog een gedeelte genaamd de Tunnel of Hell. Het bevat levensgrote modellen van duivels, demonen en zondaars die de kwellingen en verschrikkingen van de hel doorstaan. De tempelmuren tonen je de weg naar verlichting door honderden stripvoorstellingen van gebeurtenissen uit het leven van de Boeddha weer te

geven.

Nationaal park Yala

Deze geweldige safari biedt de mogelijkheid om Yala National Park te bezoeken, het tweede grootste park van het eiland aan de zuidoostkust van Sri Lanka. Krijg de kans om de beroemde Sri Lankaanse luipaarden, inheemse wilde waterbuffels, Sri Lankaanse luiaardberen en grote kuddes Sri Lankaanse olifanten te zien. Het park herbergt ook vele andere soorten zoogdieren, vogels, reptielen, amfibieën, vissen en

ongewervelde dieren.

Day 1 Negombo > Yala

You will be picked up from your hotel in Negombo and you will head straight towards Yala while making a few pit stops along the way. Your first stop over would be the Lakpura LLC head office an then you will travel to the Weherahena Buddhist Temple which is in Matara. This temple is famed to be the first tunnel temple while there is also a 130 ft Buddha statue. The next stop would be the Wewrukannala Buduraja Maha Viharaya with the main attraction being the 160 ft seated Buddha image making it the largest statue in Sri Lanka. The temple also has a place called the tunnel of hell.

Weherahena Buddhist Temple

Weherahena Poorwarama Raja Maha Viharaya is situated in the Matara District of Sri Lanka, about 6 kilometers off the Matara town. This rather unique temple is known as the first tunnel temple in the world. The temple hosts a massive 130-ft Buddha image that was built following the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa eras and also consists of all main features of a Buddhist temple- the pagoda, a sacred bo-tree and Samadhi Buddha statue. The walls of the temple are adorned with with Buddha murals. According to the historical records, the tunnel temple paintings narrate the Jātaka tales (legends) of Ummagga Jathaka and Umandawa.

Wewrukannala Buduraja Maha Viharaya

Wewurukannala Raja Maha Viharaya, this sacred Buddhist temple is located 1.5 kilometers from Dikwella towards Beliatta. The main attraction of the temple is the 160-ft tall statue of seated Buddha. It is the largest statue in the whole of Sri Lanka and dates back to the late 18th Century. The temple has another section named the Tunnel of Hell. It features life-sized models of devils, demons and sinners going through the torments and horrors of hell. The temple walls show you the path towards enlightenment by depicting hundreds of comic strip representations of events in the Buddha’s life.

Day 2 Yala > Matara > Negombo

Day 2 we will take you to the Yala National Park which is located along the South Eastern coast and inland. The Yala Safari is always exciting since you get to spot a few endangered animals including the leopards and the Sri Lankan elephant. These elephants will be seen walking around the park in herds while many mammals, amphibians, bears, reptiles and rare birds can easily be spotted. Once the safari is completed, you will be dropped in Negombo.

Yala National Park

This amazing Safari offers the opportunity to visit Yala National Park, the second largest in the island based off the Southeastern coast of Sri Lanka. Get a chance to see the famous Sri Lankan leopards, indigenous wild water buffalo, Sri Lankan Sloth Bear and large herds of Sri Lankan Elephants. The park is also home to many other species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates.
