Kalkudah

Kalkudah of Kalkuda is een kustplaats ongeveer 35 kilometer ten noordwesten van Batticaloa, Batticaloa District, Sri Lanka. Vroeger was het een populaire toeristenbestemming, maar door de tsunami in de Indische Oceaan en de Sri Lankaanse burgeroorlog in 2004 is het aantal toeristen gedaald. Pasikudah en Kalkudah liggen enkele kilometers van elkaar.

Over het district Batticaloa

Batticaloa is een stad in de oostelijke provincie Sri Lanka. Batticaloa ligt aan de oostkust van Sri Lanka op een vlakke kustvlakte aan boord van de Indische Oceaan, in het oosten en beslaat het centrale een deel van het oosten van Sri Lanka. Batticaloa ligt aan de oostkust, op 314 km van Colombo. De bevolking van 515.707 bestaat voornamelijk uit Tamils, Moren, Singalezen, Euro-Aziatische burgers (met name Portugese burgers en Nederlandse burgers) en inheemse Vedda-bevolking.

Rijst en kokosnoten zijn de twee hoofdbestanddelen van het district, en stoomboten die op het eiland handelen, komen regelmatig naar de haven. De lagune staat bekend om zijn „zingende vis” die zogenaamd schelpvissen zijn die muzieknoten voortbrengen. De wijk heeft een overblijfsel van Veddahs of wilde mannen uit het bos.

De stad heeft vier hoofddivisies

  • Pullianthivu: zetel van veel overheidsdiensten en -kantoren, scholen, banken, religieuze plaatsen, algemeen ziekenhuis, Weber Stadium en winkels. Tegenwoordig zijn ook veel NGO-kantoren gevestigd, waaronder ICRC, UN, UNICEF, WORLD VISION enz.
  • Koddamunai: Scholen, banken, het regionale kantoor van Sri Lanka Telecom voor Oost, Winkels en vele overheidskantoren zijn gevestigd. Twee bruggen genaamd Perya Palam en Puthuppalam verbinden het eiland Pulianthivu met de landmassa van Koddaminai.
  • Kallady: Hier zijn veel overheidsgebouwen en particuliere industrieën, scholen, ziekenhuizen en de Eastern University Medical Faculty. Kallady Lady Manning Bridge (de langste brug in Sri Lanka) verbindt Kallady en Arasay.

Over Eastern Province

De oostelijke provincie is een van de 9 provincies van Sri Lanka. De provincies bestaan al sinds de 19e eeuw, maar hadden pas in 1987 een wettelijke status toen het 13e amendement op de grondwet van Sri Lanka van 1978 provinciale raden oprichtte. Tussen 1988 en 2006 werd de provincie tijdelijk samengevoegd met de noordelijke provincie om de provincie Noordoost te vormen. De hoofdstad van de provincie is Trincomalee. De oostelijke provincie had in 2007 1.460.939 inwoners. De provincie is de meest diverse van Sri Lanka, zowel etnisch als religieus.

De

oostelijke provincie heeft een oppervlakte van 9.996 vierkante kilometer (3.859,5 vierkante mijl). De provincie wordt omringd door de noordelijke provincie in het noorden, de Golf van Bengalen in het oosten, de zuidelijke provincie in het zuiden en de Uva, Centraal en Noord-Centrale provincies in het westen. De kust van de provincie wordt gedomineerd door lagunes, waarvan de grootste de Batticaloa-lagune, de Kokkilai-lagune, de Upaar-lagune en de Ullackalie-lagune zijn.

About Batticaloa District

Batticaloais a city in the Eastern province of Sri Lanka.Batticaloa is in the eastern coast of Sri Lanka on a flat coastal plain boarded by the Indian Ocean in the east occupies the central part of the eastern Sri Lanka. Batticaloa is on the East coast, 314 km from Colombo. The population of 515,707 consists mainly of Tamils, Moors, Sinhalese, Euro-Asian Burghers (specifically Portuguese Burghers and Dutch Burghers) and indigenous Vedda population.

Rice and coconuts are the two staples of the district, and steamers trading round the island call regularly at the port. The lagoon is famous for its "singing fish" supposed to be shell-fish which give forth musical notes. The district has a remnant of Veddahs or wild men of the wood.

The city has four main divisions

Pullianthivu: Seat of many government department and offices, schools, banks religious places, General Hospital, Weber Stadium and Shops. Nowadays many NGO offices including ICRC, UN, UNICEF, WORLD VISION etc.are located also.

Koddamunai: Schools, Banks,Sri Lanka Telecom regional office for East, Shops and many government offices are located. Two bridges called Perya Palam and Puthuppalam are connect Pulianthivu Island with Koddaminai land mass.

Kallady: Here there are many Government buildings and private industries, schools, hospitals and Eastern University Medical Faculty. Kallady Lady Manning Bridge (the longest bridge in Sri Lanka) connects Kallady and Arasay.

About Eastern Province

The Eastern Province is one of the 9 provinces of Sri Lanka. The provinces have existed since the 19th century but they didn't have any legal status until 1987 when the 13th Amendment to the 1978 Constitution of Sri Lanka established provincial councils. Between 1988 and 2006 the province was temporarily merged with the Northern Province to form the North-East Province. The capital of the province is Trincomalee. The Eastern province's population was 1,460,939 in 2007. The province is the most diverse in Sri Lanka, both ethnically and religiously.

Eastern province has an area of 9,996 square kilometers (3,859.5 sq mi).The province is surrounded by the Northern Province to the north, the Bay of Bengal to the east, the Southern Province to the south, and the Uva, Central and North Central provinces to the west. The province's coast is dominated by lagoons, the largest being Batticaloa lagoon, Kokkilai lagoon, Upaar Lagoon and Ullackalie Lagoon.
