Jaffna

Jaffna is de belangrijkste stad van het schiereiland Jaffna in het noordelijkste district van Sri Lanka. Comfortabele streekbussen vanuit Colombo doen er 10-12 uur over om de stad Jaffna te bereiken.

De

marine van Sri Lanka beheert een passagiersbootdienst van het schiereiland Jaffna naar het eiland Nagadeepa, waar de oude boeddhistische tempel Nagadeepa zich bevindt.

Over het district Jaffna

Jaffna is de hoofdstad van de noordelijke provincie, Sri Lanka. 85% van de bevolking van de districten Jaffna en Kilinochchi is hindoes. De hindoes volgen de Saivitische traditie. De overgeblevenen zijn grotendeels rooms-katholieken of protestanten, van wie sommigen afstammelingen zijn van koloniale kolonisten, bekend als Burghers. De Tamils zijn verdeeld volgens kastenlijnen, waarbij de boerenkaste Vellalar de meerderheid vormt. Zeeproducten, rode ui en tabak zijn de belangrijkste producten in Jaffna.

Jaffna is de thuisbasis van prachtige hindoetempels. Een oud Hollands fort staat nog steeds goed bewaard gebleven, waarin zich een oude kerk bevindt. Een ander voorbeeld van Nederlandse architectuur is het King's House. Een bezoek aan Jaffna is niet compleet zonder de voortreffelijke Jaffna-mango te proeven, die bekend staat om zijn zoetheid. Op ongeveer 3 km afstand ligt de majestueuze Nallur Kandaswamy-tempel, de thuisbasis van het grootste religieuze festival in Jaffna. De haven van Kayts is een oude scheepsaanlegplaats in de regio Jaffna.

Over de noordelijke provincie

De noordelijke provincie is een van de 9 provincies van Sri Lanka. De provincies bestaan al sinds de 19e eeuw, maar ze hadden geen wettelijke status tot 1987, toen het 13e amendement op de grondwet van Sri Lanka provinciale raden oprichtte. Tussen 1988 en 2006 werd de provincie tijdelijk samengevoegd met de oostelijke provincie om de noordoostelijke provincie te vormen. De hoofdstad van de provincie is Jaffna.

Northern Province ligt in het noorden van Sri Lanka en ligt op slechts 35 km van India. De provincie wordt omringd door de Golf van Mannar en Palk Bay in het westen, Palk Strait in het noorden, de Golf van Bengalen in het oosten en de oostelijke, noordelijke, centrale en noordwestelijke provincies in het zuiden. De provincie heeft een aantal lagunes, waarvan de grootste de Jaffna-lagune, Nanthi Kadal, Chundikkulam Lagoon, Vadamarachchi-lagune, Uppu Aru Lagoon, Kokkilai-lagune, Nai Aru Lagoon en Chalai Lagoon. De meeste eilanden rond Sri Lanka liggen ten westen van de noordelijke provincie. De grootste eilanden zijn: Kayts, Neduntivu, Karaitivu, Pungudutivu en Mandativu.

De noordelijke provincie telde 1.311.776 inwoners in 2007. De meerderheid van de bevolking bestaat uit Sri Lankaanse Tamils, met een minderheid uit Sri Lankaanse Moor en Singalezen. Sri Lankaans Tamil is de belangrijkste taal die door de overgrote meerderheid van de bevolking in de provincie wordt gesproken. De andere taal die door 1 procent van de bevolking wordt gesproken is Singalees. Engels wordt veel gesproken en begrepen in de steden.

About Jaffna District

Jaffna is the capital city of the Northern Province, Sri Lanka. 85% of the populations of the Jaffna and Kilinochchi districts are Hindus. The Hindus follow the Saivite tradition. The remainders are largely Roman Catholics or Protestants, some of whom are descendants of colonial settlers, known as Burghers. The Tamils are divided along caste lines, with the farmer-caste Vellalar forming the majority. Sea products, red onion, and tobacco are the main products in Jaffna.

Jaffna is home to beautiful Hindu temples. An Old Dutch Fort still stands well preserved within which is an old Church. Another example of Dutch architecture is the King's House. No visit to Jaffna is complete without tasting the exquisite Jaffna mango, reputed for its sweetness. About 3 km away is the majestic Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, home to the largest religious festival in Jaffna. The Kayts Harbour is an ancient ship docking site in the Jaffna region.

About Northern Province

The Northern Province is one of the 9 provinces of Sri Lanka. The provinces have existed since the 19th century but they didn't have any legal status until 1987 when the 13th Amendment to the 1978 Constitution of Sri Lanka established provincial councils. Between 1988 and 2006 the province was temporarily merged with the Eastern Province to form the North-East Province. The capital of the province is Jaffna.

Northern Province is located in the north of Sri Lanka and is just 22 miles (35 km) from India. The province is surrounded by the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay to the west, Palk Strait to the north, the Bay of Bengal to the east and the Eastern, North Central and North Western provinces to the south.The province has a number of lagoons, the largest being Jaffna Lagoon, Nanthi Kadal, Chundikkulam Lagoon, Vadamarachchi Lagoon, Uppu Aru Lagoon, Kokkilai lagoon, Nai Aru Lagoon and Chalai Lagoon.Most of the islands around Sri Lanka are to be found to the west of the Northern Province. The largest islands are: Kayts, Neduntivu, Karaitivu, Pungudutivu and Mandativu.

The Northern Province's population was 1,311,776 in 2007. The majority of the populations are Sri Lankan Tamils, with a minority Sri Lankan Moor and Sinhalese population. Sri Lankan Tamil is the major language spoken in the province by the vast majority of the population. The other language spoken is Sinhala by 1 percent of the population. English is widely spoken and understood in the cities.
